This would depend on what type of drain tile you are using. If it is Flexible HDPE (high density polyethylene) then it doesn't matter. There are slotted holes all around the drain tile, there is no wrong or right way. If using Rigid PVC, place the holes in a 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock position.Water will drain from both sides.

The holes in drain tiles face down. This is so the grout can grip the tiles and hold them in place securely. If you installed them the other way, they would not hold in place as well.

The majority of profesionals think the holes in the drain tile should face down but many others believe the holes should face up. It's about a 75%/20% split. Both methods will work but I would say go with the majority, face down.

The holes in your drain tiles should face down. When they are facing down it allows the water to to be caught in the pipe as soon as it begins to filling up If you holes are facing up water is only caught after they begin to fill.
