First look to see if there are any clues on your adoption papers. If not send a letter if you know the hospital where you were born or the adoption agency. If they can't help you place notices on adoption websites. Another avenue is to hire a private detective to help the search.

There are a number of websites that offer info as to how to proceed. First you need to find out if the agency has that info, then go from there.

You can begin with the birth certificate which you can find in the town you are born in. You can use a site online to find out.

The rules for this actually vary a great deal depending upon where you were adopted. The best place to start is with the adoption agency that placed you; your adoptive parents should have this information. If that doesn't work, or if they are no longer around, you can try the vital records department in the state where you were born.
