Like the promo says: the cases are real, the people are real. (The show pays the judgments.) The courtroom is a CBS set, replete with all the necessary technical equipment and live audience. New Yorker Judy sat on the bench of NYC family courts for 40 years. The shows intro shows NYC, but is actually filmed at in Los Angeles.

The show is filmed in a Hollywood studio and is considered "reality" TV. Its not a real courtroom nor are her decisions legally binding. It's actually small-claims arbitration.

The decisions are in fact legally binding. Participants sign an agreement prior to appearing on the show. The cases are real and are chosen based on what makes good TV: outrageous, ridiculous, and sometimes just silly. Details at the JudgeJudy website.  add a comment
