There are two answers to this question: Many see all keyboard instruments as a family of instruments unto themselves, and in this case the piano belongs with harpsichords, clavinovas, accordions, etc. However, others say the piano is technically a percussion instrument since the keys actually govern hammers that strike or hit internal metal strings.

A piano is considered a percussion instrument. When you strike a key on the piano, there's a hammer inside that hits the string; that's the percussion.
