A carfax report tells you anytime the car has been in the shop to get fixed or by a dealer or any shops that reports on the net work. It will also tell you any time the car has been in a accident based upon police reports. Overall I always get one.

CARFAX polls for information based on a vehicle's VIN number, such as accident reports, insurance claims, and recall information. The company that provides CARFAX reports does guarantee that the information that is provided is accurate. Some of this information may be accessible on one's own, but could become costly to research a vehicles history on your own.

They go through a nationwide data base that people have submitted over time through insurance companies everything that has been claimed is in their history.

CarFax gets their vehicle information from a database. When vehicle go in for repairs, or have accidents, etc, data is entered into this database. It is reliable and accurate, but I think there may be some info that never appears. I would run another report, such as Auto Check to compare and have second source.
