The word 'fore' is believed to have originated in Scotland in the 1800's. 'Fore' is used to 'forewarn' or call out to people ahead. If a golfer hits a wild shot that is headed towards other golfers, he should yell "FORE", signaling them to 'look out' or duck.

When a player hits a shot which is likely to hit other people, they yell out fore at the top of their voices to make sure the person the ball is heading towards does not get hit on the forehead.
