Most engines will have different marks on the pulley and the timing tab. Theses are to allow you to set different degrees of timing for the engines. It allows reference to move time forward and backward of TDC depending on what the engine needs. Otherwise it would be hard to know what the timing was.

The timing marks are the white marks on the pulley that will move with it and appear in the same position when the care is one, if they change position as you run the engine, then you know that you cylinders are firing out of alignment.

A nissan Altima does not have timing marks on the crank pulley due to the fact that it is a coil on plug system which is controlled by the computer.

Engines have different marks on pulley to set different degrees on engine. The time moves back and forward on the TDC. Plus some them doesn't has pulley markings on them and has a coil with a plug to be controlled by a computer system. Some models has different markings or timing tabs on them.
