The closest redwoods to Monterey Ca are in Big Sur. These are Coastal Redwoods. If you want to see giant Sequoias then you have to go to the Sierra.

The closest redwoods near Monterey Bay are probably those found in the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, which features an number of areas catering to lots of redwoods. The park features all three redwood types: Coast Redwood, Giant Sequoia, and Dawn Redwood. If you want to see redwoods, then this state park is the place for you.

The closest stand would be in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, just north of Santa Cruz off Hwy 236 via 9. But go a little farther, up 101 past San Francisco to Muir Woods National Monument inside Mount Tamalpais State Park. It's magnificent.
