King Alfred the Great ruled from 871 to 899 in what is present day England. Alfred worked hard to cultivate an atmosphere of education and literacy. He also made huge strides in codifying local laws into a more overarching system through the establishment of a single law book. He was also a proponent of fairness under the law.

His reign was from 849-26th October 899. He promoted education and literacy which was not of concern by the rich. He made the legal code by bringing together long established laws of christian kingdoms of Kent,Mercia and Wessex.
