It is used in certain women who don't have a menstrual period because of decreased levels of progesterone. A doctor may determine that it can be useful in other situations. It should not be used by a pregnant woman or anyone who is allergic to peanuts. If you are very overweight this may be a concern, also.

A doctor will prescribe Prometrium when a woman has stopped having menstrual periods before menopause. Prometrium has progesterone in it which is a hormone that a woman ovaries produce.

Prometrium is used to initiate a period in women with irregular cycles, when they do not ovulate properly. Only do so under doctor's orders and with a negative pregnancy test.
