Several countries -- not the USA -- observe Martyr's Days to commemorate events in their national histories. In India, Martyr's Day is January 30,anniversary of Gandhi's assassination. In Panama, it is January 9, anniversary of 1954 sovereignty riots. Tibet, Armenia, and other countries also observe their own Martyr's Days.

Several different countries like India, Iran, Panama, Albania, etc all have a martyr's day. The reasons for each are different, but the overall reason why a country has a martyr's day is to remember and important figure, or group, that was killed in a particular way and form.
