The nineteenth amendment to the U. S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote in every U. S. state, was ratified on August 18, 1920. Prior to that, several states had allowed women to vote in local elections. The nineteenth amendment, however, opened up all elections to adult women.

Many states had woman suffrage in the 17th century/brief periods later, which was then revoked. Women were able to vote permanently in Wyoming: 1869 Idaho: 1896 Washington: 1910 California: 1911 Michigan, Kansas, Oregon, Arizona: 1912 Kentucky (School Board elections only): 1912 All other states: 1920 with the 19th Amendment.

Women in the U. S. were given the right to vote by the 19th Amendment to the Constitution and the states ratified that amendment in 1920.
