The encomienda system was officially abolished in 1720. It was abandoned for other forms of labor. Encomienda derives from the Spanish verb encomendar which means to entrust.

The encomienda system was essentially feudalism in Central and South America. It came to an end in the 20th century as central government grew stronger.

This was the method through which the Spanish controlled their new world colonies. A grant from the Spanish crown gave a person control over a specified number of natives in exchange for teaching them Spanish and converting them to Catholicism. It ended legally in 1720, but lasted until the Mexican Revolution in Mexico.
