Always book months in advance for cheap tickets. It's best to plan on traveling in January (after New Year's) or February for the best rates within the US. If you're going to a tropical place, then the middle of summer will have the best rates as the weather will be very hot and humid.

Airline tickets are usually at it's cheapest typically in the "off" travel times. Those times are usually not during the high peak travel summer season, which is anywhere from May to August, because that is when children are out of school, parents have free time and they travel. Also, not during the holiday season. Try September to October.

It is best to travel on Mondays and during the months of September-October, and February-March. If possible, avoid traveling on weekends.

Normally during vacation or festival seasons, air tickets are not cheapest due to heavy rush. So you may select such season and make advance booking. During such season, some particular airlines will announce that they are providing air tickets in cheaper rates. That should be watched and make your plans for travelling.
