"Love" can be all encompassing and all inclusive: Loving beer, dogs, cats, football and so forth. Being "in love" is a state of focus on one thing, usually a person. It is a response to that person that obviates all other connections and causes the person who is in love to border (and sometimes exceed) the limits of sanity.

Love is the deep affection you feel for someone who is not necessarily your significant other. Being in love is that warm feeling you feel for someone you love and makes you want to be with them forever. The two are related but not the same.
