There are seven category for literature, including poetry, non-fiction (memoir/biography) and history. Anyone can submit the work. It must be published in the US and available for sale to the general public in the year of the nomination, which is late in the year. The board, comprised of editors and publishing bigwigs votes to decide the winners in each category.
