What would cause the fuel gauge in my car to stop working?

Most of the time this is a bad ground wire on the tank,also the float inside the tank could be stuck.

The fuel tank has a float and if this is damaged /has a bad contact the gauge will not work. Electrical and fuel pump problems could also cause a malfunction.

It could be a number of issues. You could have a loose wire which is not connecting the fuel tank sensor to your gauge. You should take it in to have it checked out to find out the reason for sure. Once it is determined it should be a quick thing to fix.

It could be either an electrical or mechanical problem. A break in the electrical circuit (either wire, or contact related), or a mechanical problem with the fuel level indicator.
