When you say the engine is locking up, do you mean that it will just stop moving for you? You should have your transmission checked, as this can sometimes cause what it seems you are saying.

Did you forget to put oil in it? That's the major cause of engine seizures. If it's not frozen, just dying, you might check to make sure the air intake isn't fouled with grass clippings.

There may be several causes namely: lack of oil, too much compression in the muffler, or it may be the blades which got engaged overturning the mower

One of the most common reasons would be running the engine with little or no engine oil. Also, check to make sure a blade is not severely bent.
