What would be the baby's last name if parents aren't married?

Often times if the parents are not married the child takes the mothers last name. Your situation maybe different and you may want your child to have his/her fathers last name. It depends on you. Best of Luck.

If the child's parents are not married at the time of birth, the default last name is that of the birth mother. However, they can opt to have the child's last name be that of the biological father - but the mother must agree to this when the parents are not married.

Anything you want. You can pick one or hyphenate. I'm not aware of any law saying a baby has to have either of the parent's last names, so you can really pick anything you want.

It is traditional to name a baby after his/her dad. Traditions are changing and many out of -wedlock marriages are common. This may eventually have the effect of moms using their last name. This does happen a little more often since the 1970's but is not predominant at this point.
