He did some repair work for me, but I'm broke.

You could offer to provide him with other services. If that is not acceptable, then perhaps organise a way to pay him back in installments.

Try to be sensitive to your friend; sit down with him and work out a payment plan. Pay a little each week, or month, until your debt is paid back.
