During the 1940's the top fashions included women's swing dresses, wide hats, swirling skirts, evening gowns, and blouses. After World War II ended in 1945 women began tailoring the men's pants for themselves for comfort during working hours. Tweed, cotton, fur, wool and silk were very popular in the 1940's.

During the 1940's World War II impacted virtually every aspect of life including fashion. Silk stockings were replaced by synthetic nylon. Swing skirtss were a common sight on dance floors. Menswear as womenwear, platform pumps, loose-fitting cardigans, swirling skirts and shimmering evening gowns were some other fashion trends during the 1940's.

World War II dramatically affected fashion in this era. Most dresses were very simple, with the exception of large shoulder pads in women's suits. Women began wearing pants during this decade. Ankle strap shoes were the rage and a man was never without his fedora and trench coat.
