The first "colony" was the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam. The British came along later to found New York. The earlies British outpost was on the island of Manhattan, which they bought for beads and hatchets.

Found in 1664, New York, or New Netherland as it was first known as, became one of the original 13 colonies in 1685. Dutch colonization in New Netherland extended up the Hudson River, claimed and named by Henry Hudson, who was off course when he "found" it. In 1664, the Dutch and their territories were claimed by the English.
