The fixture rating should be specified on the fixture itself. If the total fixture electrical rating is for 100 watts maximum, then each bulb will need to be rated at 25 watts or less. Use a bulb of the correct wattage, voltage, and base type to properly fit and function in the lamp socket.

If you're using traditional incandescent light bulbs you can use up to four 25 watt bulbs providing a total of 840 lumens. If you're using CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lights) bulbs, you can use up to four 23W CFL bulbs providing 5520 lumens (approximately equivalent to three 100 watt incandescent bulbs).

If the fixture as a whole has a maximum wattage of 100 watts, then each bulb can be at most 25 watts. Or you could use a combination of lower and higher wattage bulbs, so long as the total is 100 watts or less. For example, you could use two 40 watt bulbs and 2 10 watt bulbs.

If the 4 lamp fixture is rated for a maximum of 100 watts total, each bulb should be 25 watts or less. Alternately, if special lighting effects are desired, bulbs of different wattage, such as 15, 25, and 40 watts could be combined, so long as the 100 watt maximum is not exceeded.
