The Wright Brothers did not actually create an airplane by modern standards, it was far closer to a glider. It looked rather like a biplane's frame, without an engine or landing gear. While rather crude by modern standards, the 1 minute 12 second flight of the Wrights' 1911 glider was nothing short of astonishing at the time.

It was a powered biplane with control surfaces both to the front and back of the main wings. It had no fuselage.
