Until recently it was Pirates of the Caribbean with it's estimated $300 million budget, but James Cameron surpassed the previous record with the $500 million budget for Avatar. Part of the cost was the development of new film technology that allowed Cameron to combine the computer generated imagery with live action so he could view them together while filming.
