It was a galleon captained by Sir Francis Drake on his first around the world expedition between 1577 and 1580. He renamed the Pelican in honor of his patron who had a crest with a golden hind.

Hind refers to a doe (female dear). Hinds are often referred to in Greek mythology in association with Artemis, goddess of hunting. The third labour of Heracles was to capture the Ceryneian Hind. It is also the name of a ship captained by Sir Francis Drake in the 16th century.
