In the 19th Century, English society was making the transition to becoming the worlds first heavily industrial nation. Class divisions changed from an agrarian to an industrial class system with the rise of the proletariat and the bourgeois. The old aristocracy joined with the new industrialist to keep the working class under control by, for example, limiting suffrage.

English society in the 19th century, or the Victorian Age, was very austere. Many people maintained strict dress codes, societal and class roles, and carried rather reserved demeanors.

English society was very stratified. There were wealthy nobles, who had servants and threw lavish parties. But most people worked long, very hard hours in factories or farms.
