Estheticians must be licensed according to standards set by the National Coalition of Estheticians, in conjunction with having graduated from a cosmetology or state-approved training program.

To be an esthetician and work in a reputable salon or spa, you need to go to cosmotology school. There are lots of programs that usually only take about 2 years. Depending on how hard you are willing to work, you could finish it in less. It is a separate program that traditional colleges.

One of the things an esthetician is trained in for working in the salon is the skill of knowing different skin types.

It depends on where you live. In some jurisdictions it is separate training from hairdressing. In others, it is a combination.

In the US, most salons and spas are regulated by state boards. Hair stylists, manicurists, makeup artists, and other estheticians must attend a training program, such as a beauty school, and become licensed to practice in their state. Ask your stylist about the guidelines in your state and start looking around for the cosmetology institute that's right for you.

Yes, its a different program from cosmetology. It is the same branch but for an esthetician one needs more specialized skills. Therefore its also good to research the school that you're attending to make sure that they do offer that program within the school.
