What tips do you have for picking the best of the available camping sites?

I am going on a long tent camping trip and want some help on locating good camping spots.

Try to find a campground that has their sites on level dirt ground so that you can pitch the tent evenly and then make a "moat" around the tent in case it rains.

Astronomers want to see the sky, so no trees. Others like convenience, so close to the privy and firewood. Make sure it's above where river flooding could happen.

Location location location. You want something that will be high and dry if it is going to rain, something close to water if that's what you want. a location that will be protected from the elements if things go bad. Mostly depends on your style of camping and how many people are with you.

Well, you should go to one where you shouldn't have to pay too much money, and that has atleast some phone access for emergencies.

You should ensure that the site has is level so you will be comfortable while you are sleeping. Also make sure that it is not an the bottom of a hill so the site doesn't flood if it rains. Also nice to have trees for shade in the daytime.

The best way is to find someone who has been to the campsite and ask. Or, find a map and a spot e.g. close but not too close to showers.
