What tips can you provide on refinishing old picture frames?

I have several picture frames that are 30 years old that I would like to refinish.

First you need to scrape the old paint or varnish coating from the surface. It is done with mild sandpaper. Then you need to apply new layer of paint (optional) and/or 2 layers of protective varnish. If there are old rusty nails you might consider replacing them also.

If they're made of wood you can sand it down and stain or varnish them. There's also products specifically made for refinishing wood at Lowe's or Home Depot that work really well. Frames made of otehr materials can be easily spary painted or you can add a fresh coat of any paint to make it look new again.

The easiest way to refinish old picture frames is with spray paint; a high gloss black looks very sharp and modern, but any color can be used. If you would like to re-stain the frames, sand them down, stain with the desired color of stain, and finish with a coat of varnish.

First, decide what room they will go in. Do you want the picture frames to blend in with your decor? Also, decide if they will be painted or stained.

If the picture frame has deteriorated over time then you can fill the hole with wood putty , sand smooth and varnish.
