I am restricted to room so I strongly suggest you get info from your local university Extension Service, they are EXCELLENT. You need sufficient water, proper feed, but you don't require a great deal of space. You need to be very careful of predators- raccoons and foxes can be brutal and very clever about getting into roosts. Cleanliness is PARAMOUNT.

Marans are quiet chickens and not as flighty as the Leghorn variety. This can mean that they get eaten by predators more often. An enclosed chicken house with constant access to fresh laswn or pasture, a dry area for feed, a roost for perching and nesting boxes are a start.

Marans are an heirloom breed, so contacting the preservation society is a good idea. I love my Marans, they are larger and more agressive birds, needing space and supervision.

They will need a coop to roost in and it show have an inclosed top on it. Foxes and other small animals will try and eat them if they are left out in the open.

Raising chickens can be quite rewarding. Make sure that if you are raising them for eggs that you feed them layer pellets, as they provide the best nutrition. A coop with a roost and nesting boxes is a must if you want them to be happy, laying hens. Other than that, food, water, and shelter will keep chickens happy!

To properly care for your laying hens, you will first need to set up proper housing. Their house needs to have a roof, a windbreak, a roost, and strong predator-resistant wire.

They love to have a very warm area to live. Plenty of water and feed will help this out. Most are the same color.
