The treatment for a hematoma depends on its size and condition. Superficial treatment usually consists of rest, ice, compression and elevation of limb or affected part (RICE for short). Some physicians and health care workers recommend heat to the affected area along with aspirin, Tylenol or ibuprofen for pain. Internal hematomas are isolated cases with individual specific treatments.

A hematoma is a type of bruise. The easiest treatment is applying ice to the area to try to slow deep bleeding caused by damaged blood vessels.

A hematoma should be treated by applying ice as fast as possible after the injury, then if possible the injured area should be elevated. If the injury still hurts after 48 hours, apply a warm compress for 20 minutes.

Hematomas typically resolve on their own over time without any intervention required. However in some cases they do not resolve or cause pain and other issues in which case your physician may aspirate it.
