Not all plants are the same but as a general rule, sugar would promote rather than stunt growth. Diluted alcohol can stunt leaf growth and aspirin can inhibit general growth.

Any high sugar drink, especially soda, gives the plants too much sugar to metabolize therefore stunting the growth of your plants.
