What steps should I take to clean an HP printer?

It's smearing the copies I make.

1. Bring the printing carriage to the center position and remove the cartridges. 2. Unplug the printer to allow the carriage to move freely. 3. Fold a paper towel and "floss" it between the carriage and the paper path. 4. Replace the cartridges and run a cleaning cycle.

It depends on the printer, I would suspect it's laser. Most of the time just changing the toner cartridge suffices, additionaly opening a printer and giving a blow helps too.

I should open up the device and check if there are any foreign things in it, for example, paper staples. These things should be removed. Also paper jam might occur.

If the Hp is an Inkjet printer its cost efficient to just buy another printer. You apparently have damaged the actual jets which cost more to repair or replace as opposed to buying a new printer.
