What skills are necessary for a career as a secretary?

The most important attribute of a secretary is his/her organizational skills. Outgoing personality, public relations background and advance knowledge on office equipments is crutial but organising the office infrastructure, scheduling the necessary appointments and filing documents way are the most important skills. Helping managers to communicate with peers and workers are also important thus requires sound communication skills.

Secretarial skills are mostly about organization. Good customer service and people skills are essential to be a secretary; language and conversational skills are necessary as well. Computer-related skills, like being able to use Microsoft Office, are always needed, as well as basic knowledge of phone service, faxing, copying, and using other standard office equipment.

First of all, the job is called an Administrative Assistant, not a secretary. A secretary job implies mindless work and being sexually harassed. To become an Administrative Assistant, you need to be able to type fast, have skills with Microsoft Office and understand how to keep paperwork organized.

A secretary should be able to use a computer well including most Microsoft Office products. You should be able to answer the phones, handle scheduling of important meetings, and deal with the filing. In general you need to be well kept and polite at all times.

Good communication skills both on a phone and off a phone is probably the number one. The ability to organize both yourself and someone else (create and maintain a file system) along with good word processing skills. Finally, a familiarity with email and office technology systems are a must in just about every modern office.
