What similarities and differences do you see between functions and linear equations?

Both provide relationship between 2 or more variables. Unlike linear equations, functions can have variables wirh power more than 1 or variables used in denominator.

Linear equations of the form y = mx + b are actually a specific type of function. That is for every y, there is a unique x that produces it.
