Do not try this on your own, as it can be dangerous both to yourself and your bird! Try to prevent the beak from becoming overgrown by providing the bird with material such as natural wooden perches or cuttlebones, so it can keep its beaks in good shape. If the beak is still overgorwn or deformed, contact an avian vet.

When you trim your parakeets' beak be sure to trim it less than you might think you should because if you trim it too short it can be very painful and even life threatening. Another thing to remember is don't hold the bird too tight while you are trimming.

Since the beak of a parakeet is much like a very thick fingernail with veins running through it, trimming the beak yourself is not recommended. It is best to have this done by an avian veterinarian since incorrectly trimming the beak can result in blood loss, permanent beak damage, and may even stress your bird to the point of death.

If you're unsure about how to do it, the best thing is to take it to an avian (bird)vet. Most vets charge just a few dollars and it only takes a minute or two. Attempting it yourself could be dangerous to your bird if you don't know what you're doing. Better safe than sorry.
