There are risks with having any kind of surgery. However, specific risks with carotid artery surgery are bleeds or blood clots in the brain, heart attack, brain damage, swelling in your trachea (airway), and more blockage in the carotid artery over time. Rare issues that occur but can occur are seizure and stroke.

Two weeks before surgery your doctor should know about any cold and flu you have. After midnight the night before your surgery do not drink anything including water. This surgery will help lower your chance of having a stroke.

Before undergoing carotid surgery you should know whether you have partial or total block due to build up of plaque in the artery.
