Because you are being tattooed in close proximity to bone (no muscle or fat to cushion bone sensation) be prepared for pain. Depending on the size of the tattoo you should stay hydrated and take a few breaks.

Obviously you should know about the pain level. The ribs are well known to be one of the most painful places to get a tattoo. After getting it done you should also avoid to tight of clothing and keep it moisturized.

The most important thing to know before gettin a tattoo is your personal pain tolerance. In this case, it would also be a good idea to know your body weight. If you have sufficient body weight and high pain tolerance, proceed with a tattoo over your ribs.

A tattoo over your ribs will hurt as it is being done over bone. If you have a job where you have to bend frequently, you will experience quite a bit of pain and you should refrain from bending as often as possible.

The most painful areas to get a tattoo done on are places either very tender (like the back of the arm) or places were the skin is thin over bone, such as your ribs. Be sure you can take a little time off to deal with the soreness afterwards.
