Caulking is not hard until it sets. First I would find out if its fireproof. Are you using it on the inside or outside of the fireplace? Outside of the house or inside the house. When burned will it smell. Maybe you should be using cement.

Nope, it is not hard. Find some weatherproof caulk that matches your roof, or use clear. It takes about five minutes tops.
