The earliest people were Cro Magnons. Different peoples from other areas had started coming here by the time the Neolithic period arrived, mainly France, Africa, and Spain. Around 1500 B.C. these people were being replaced by a more violent, nomadic people who arrived from across the Adriatic Sea and those who travelled from across the Alps, called Italic.

The earliest inhabitants of the Italian peninsula were called Etruscans. Their language gave some words to Latin, but was mostly different and is now completely extinct. They were simple farmers with very little state-like cohesion. Roman civilization eventually subsumed the Etruscans.
