Birds have to be weaned onto new diets over time- "they'll eat when they get hungry enough" does not apply. Change from your current diet to the pellets over two weeks, mixing in slightly more pellets every day until it is eating them. You may have to try different brands. Put fresh mix in daily- don't hold over old pellets.

A pellet diet is more nutritionally complete for birds kept as pets and is often recommended by veterinarians. Your bird may be resistant at first to this change. If so, you may try moistening the pellets with warm water or juice and removing other food from the cage.

The best way to convert your parakeet to pellet food is to gradually add a few of the pellets to his diet each time you feed him. This way he will get use to trying them and eventually eating them regularly. At this point you can switch him to pellets exclusively.
