What should I know about painting a cinder-block fireplace?

Personally, I wouldn't reccomend it. This is because when you clean the fireplace, you are likely to scratch off the paint, and it will no look good any longer. Instead, decorations along the mantle can take away from the dull color of the cinder blocks. If there is no way around painting it, use spray paint, it's easy for touch-ups.

First thing, make sure you want it painted, because there's no easy way to go back. Clean it well, then use a good primer and you should be good.

Be sure to start with a good cleaning with TSP and a wire brush and clean for mildew with a bleach mix or commercial cleaner. Then fill any cracks with caulk. Paint with a coat of latex block filler to seal the blocks then a final coat of colored paint.
