What should I know about giving cars to relatives?

You need to sell the car to the relative. Even if it's a dollar. That is the law in most states. Contact your license bureau about transfering the title.

I would wager its probably not a good idea. Larger gifts tend to cause more strain if something goes wrong. If you have a lot of money, feel free to give a car to whoever you want. But for you average joe, its a bad idea.

It may sound basic advice, but sure they drive, make sure they want a car, ask their opinion before buying. Check that they will be delighted rather than insulted by your gift because, although it is a very caring thought, some people may feel that it is charity and an affront to their pride to be bought such generous present.

Don't sell it for too cheap and these relatives may just use you for your cars or generosity. Be sure your making the right decision.
