Having a furnace to large or to small is not a good thing. Check the thermal unit output for the square footage of your home. They need to be a match.

First, you need to be able to do a heat load calculation and you have to be able to apply the atmospheric weather data for your area to your application. You also need to know the amount of infiltration, solar gain, and wind for your area. You must be adept at applying the calculations in Manual J from the ACCA.

It really depends on what type of house you are in and how big your house is. If you are living in a smaller house I would build a smaller one.
