It should be done after you thaw it. It will be good for up to 6 months. Just make sure it is fresh to start out with.

Cooked steak that is frozen will tend to dry out faster than uncooked steak. As with all frozen foods, it is susceptible to freezer burn. Wrap the steak well in plastic, followed by butcher paper. Remove as much air from the wrapping, prior to sealing, as possible. Be sure to mark your package with date and contents.

Ziplock has a vacuum packaging system , that is relatively cheap ( $5.99) , It comes with a pump and special bags that remove all the air from the bag thus eliminating freezer burn, the replacement bags are worth the money , considering the excellent storage system

Wrap it very securely, using freezer wrap or foil. You do not want air to reach the meat, as this causes freezer burn. Date it and mark it, I find sticky notes work surprisingly well. Use within 30 days. If you know you are going to freeze it, undercook it if possible so it isn't overcooked later.

One thing you should remember is to wrap the cooked steak well in reynolds wrap in order to avoid freezer burn.
