In almost all building codes, exposed boxes must be covered in some way to prevent easily being shocked and a fire hazard. If you have an exposed box, make sure it at least meets code.

I'm assuming you mean exposed to the weather so you'll need to purchase weather proof boxes for any external receptacles. Also, you'll need to a weather proof cover. Be sure to use a GFCI outlet and properly ground the circuit or a serious accident or death could be a horrible result.

If you have an exposed electrical outlet box you are risking a short in your electric system or worse. The reason for the box is to have wires protected.

If you are to install an exposed box, then you will need to use a metal box that accepts conduit, with conduit being a pipe used to protect the wiring within the exposed box; and, in order for you to do this, you will need to utilize a conduit tube bender.
