What should I include in a condolence message?

My friend recently lost his wife. I have no idea what to say to him.

What's important is that you send a card. Just write a note saying you're thinking of him. He needs to know he's not alone. Be a good friend.

First, hand write the note and speak from the heart. Express your sympathy and maybe include a favorite memory of the deceased or something that you will always remember about that person. Offer to help with anything that may be needed.

Letters of condolence are often very hard to construct. Keeping it simple often goes farther than we thing. "I'm sorry for your loss" usually will do.

I suggest you first try and imagine somebody very close to you has died. Feel the emotion of overwhelming grief, emptiness and being abondoned a person in such a situation is likely to experience. Put it into your own words and assure him that you realize how he must be feeling and that you share his sadness.

Those who have recently lost a love one need your support. Tell him that you are sorry for his loss, and offer your help if he needs it.
