Try applying ice to the thumb and resting it. Traumeel is a homeopathic remedy that you could try applying. You may also get results with Biofreeze, available from medical professionals.

Ice and ibuprofen will help reduce any swelling. You can also alternate ice with heat as the heat will offer some soothing relief. Try to give it a rest from any repetitive movements that you use it for. Massage it and gently stretch it around, too.

This is most likely a sprain caused by wear and tear - rest the thumb and use an ice pack. If the problem continues then see your doctor. a

Find out what activities may be causing the pain so you can avoid them. Exercise the joint in full range to gain it mobility back. Apply heat for swelling or to relax the muscle around the joint, apply cold to help with the pain.

Rest - Don't do things that make it hurt for a while. Ice the area to reduce inflammation. Try an anti-inflammatory if you think it's caused by an injury.

The pain may be due to either an injury or arthritis. Take an over the counter anti-inflammatory drug for a few days and try not to use the thumb. If the condition does not improve, schedule an appointment with your doctor.
