What should I do about my dog's broken tail?

He got it slammed in a door and I don't know if this is serious.

Yes, this can be very debilitating. He needs to be seen by a veterinarian to evaluate the extent of the damage to the bones and best treatment, otherwise it may interfere with his ability to control his bowel or bladder movements. The tail has an impact on these functions.

Your dog should be taken to a vet who will assess if the tail is broken. You may be given the option to have your dog's tail docked (shortened). This is a common practice and will not effect the dog's mobility.

Keep an eye on the tail and see if your dog is able to move it. A broken tail is serious and worth a trip to the vet for a proper exam, diagnosis and treatment. Broken tails can cause an infection if they are not treated properly and could lead to very severe consequences.

the best option would be to see a vet as it may need to be amputated, at the least he needs some pain control as it will be painful.

Ouch. Okay, consider how you might feel if you had a finger shut in a door. Not good right? The vet can treat his tail and give him antibiotics and medicine the pain. I am sure he is in pain.
